Butterfly drawing

A drawing idea for time together.

I made a 15-minute, line-by-line drawing activity for my daughter. This 60-second video condenses it into a demonstration with music. It is a separate personal experiment, independent of Hawes Education.

60 seconds · Music · Starts muted

An idea turned into a drawing activity, built and refined with AI assistance.

Four butterflies and five flowers, drawn and coloured in a 60-second demonstration of the longer activity.

A simple starting point

I wanted a drawing we could follow on paper together, with butterflies and flowers built up a line at a time. The full 15-minute activity can be paused while drawing. The shorter video here shows the idea and the finished picture; it is not the full lesson.

Making and checking

I used AI assistance to build and refine the animation. I made the shapes larger, worked on joins between lines and checked places where colour leaked outside the intended shape.

I also adjusted how quickly the paths were drawn and changed the sequence so each object was coloured after its outline. That meant returning to the video repeatedly to check the drawing order, timing and colour fills.

The useful part of the process was checking what actually appeared on screen. A change to one line or fill could need another pass through the sequence.

What came out of it

The demonstration draws four butterflies and five flowers, then shows the coloured scene. I added music made with Suno. The full frame keeps the Alan Hawes and AI-assisted drawing credit visible.

This page shares the short demonstration and my account of making it. The full 15-minute activity is not available here.

Room to try more

I could try another subject, adjust the pace or make the longer activity easier to pause at each stage. Those are possibilities for a future version.
